Why do you want to lose weight?

I don’t care what you weigh and I’m the personal trainer that tells you that the first day you come workout with me

There are a few different types of weight on your body

  • hair
  • shoes
  • clothes
  • water
  • food
  • muscle
  • fat

Most people going to the gym go to lose weight, but its not about what you weigh

When we workout we want to burn fat and build muscle.  Muscle has weight too

Ever hear somebody say “Muscle weighs more than fat?”

They are WRONG – 5lbs of muscle weighs 5lbs, 5lbs of Fat weighs 5lbs right?

We want to increase our weight in muscle bc when we workout our muscle burns fat, the more muscle we have the more fat we burn when we workout

So why do you want to lose weight?

What Tom Petty said

#fitness #personaltrainer #GTfitness

Back when I was a kid growing up playing sports & being around gyms, the trainers and what constitutes being a “personal trainer” was very different.

The high-school sports hero could be your trainer, the dude with big muscles could be a trainer, the football coach, your Uncle who fought in WWII, or even your Dad bc he knew how to work a leg press machine and move a lot of weight.

Let’s be honest, working out isn’t rocket science, anybody can put shoes on and walk/jog a mile to lose weight or show somebody correct form on a push-up, even how to do a lat pull to build some muscle

Through the 1980’s and 1990’s when “baby boomers” started getting older we established the American College of Sports Medicine and the National Strength and Conditioning Association so any person inspiring to be a fitness professional could get a national accredited certification after obtaining a 4 year college degree.  This really helps to give the industry credibility but has never stopped gifted athletes or dudes with big muscles giving workout advice (and never will, talk is cheap)

Fast forward to today, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Insatgram and social media has helped to create an EXPLOSION of fitness interest.  Now more than ever people are getting up off the couch motivated by a friend or colleague who has motivated themselves to not be fat and unfit anymore.  A person who posts selfies at the gym, pics of their gluten-free food, or pics with less clothes on can now get the kudos in “likes” and “shares”to build confidence that they too can now be a “personal trainer” and help others as well without any formal education, training, or certification

Make no mistake about it, I’m all for it, having more people involved getting fit and fighting Obesity is what it’s all about.  A large number of “personal trainers” in town just helps build competition and we all know that competition separates the best from rest.

Cream rises to the top and in the end, we are all a little more fit and confident

That makes me happy

The price you pay for fitness

Personal training is too expensive!!

Since I started personal training 2001 I have heard this so many times!!

I usually don’t argue or try to sell people bc if they are shopping price then they probably aren’t  just ready yet to commit to fitness.

That’s not always true with every person, for all the real salesman out there that know “Selling 101″ I am probably missing it by a long shot but I’m not a salesman, I am a trainer!!

When a perspective clients calls and wants to know price I tell them $99 consultation fee and monthly workout fees or $5 single sessions they sometimes say wow, “that’s too expensive – Why do you have a $99 fee, can you waive that?”

My reply is NO, because I have to know your health history, you goals, your measurements, strengths and weakness.  I just can’t throw you to the wolves and expect you to start losing body fat day 1, there is a process I have to show you, I need to teach you about nutrition for your body and how to workout properly  – other “workout places” waive fees bc they don’t care if you come or not, it’s just a numbers game to them.  Heck some places don’t care if you even get hurt, they have physical therapists waiting because they know you will!!

GT is different, my well-being depends on you succeeding, if you don’t show up, I don’t feed my family

We need a car to get to work, and get around in, this is what we need

This is what we really want and try to get if we can

If you think paying personal training or GT Fitness is “too expensive” I have 4 questions to ask you

  1. Is there an unhealthy habit you can remove from your life to make room for your wellness goals?
  2. How much do you spend eating out a month? Can you go out 2x less a month, so you can afford your wellness/body fat goals?
  3. How much can you afford, I can make a package to suit your financial needs?
  4. What’s $xx off of your pay check?

Let’s face it, sometimes people just want a deal!!

I got one of those if you want

A new study finds a third of children, ages 9 to 11, have cholesterol levels considered borderline or high.

In the study of 12,700 9- to 11-year-olds in Houston, researchers found:

•37% had borderline or elevated levels of total cholesterol.

•32% had borderline or low levels of “good” HDL cholesterol.

•36% had borderline or elevated levels of non-HDL cholesterol.

•46% had borderline or elevated levels of triglyceride

FDA changing food labels, easier to make better choices

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration is stepping up its effort in the fight of Obesity by changing the food labels on food and beverages.  The new tactic will place more emphasis on serving size, added sugar, vitamins and calories per serving

newfood lables

“You as a parent and a consumer should be able to walk into your local grocery store, pick up an item off the shelf, and be able to tell whether it’s good for your family,” first lady Michelle Obama said in a press release. “So this is a big deal, and it’s going to make a big difference for families all across this country.”

The American Heart associations recommends 150 kcals of sugar of or 9 teaspoons daily, for women it’s 100 kcals or 6 teaspoons of sugar a day.  The chemical sugar they add to products is the same but now the focus will be on how much sugar is added.  Americans are getting way more sugar than they need and hardly realize what total amount they do get.

Fat labeling is also being slimmed down by taking away “calories from Fat” and utilizing the breakdown of good fats and bad fats on the label.  Food companies will also be responsible to label how much of vitamins and minerals like Vit D (for bone health), are in their product along with the FDA adding another 25 categories that weren’t around 20 years ago.

I’m excited for the new change, especially here in KY, anything that will help people understand what they consume and inform them on what the better choices are will only lead to better education and self-improvement.  We need that in KENTUCKY!!

Real weight loss is Fat, not mass

Another 10 Day Food Challenge is coming to an end, and we will be measuring out to track progress.  I didn’t make the challenge up to be about losing weight, I made it to help people be more accountable & thoughtful about how they are eating to nourish thier body, as a result you WILL lose weight and inches compared to what you were doing before & it works!!

Average person will drop 3lbs.-5lbs. of mass in 10 days and lose 2″-4″ in the Abs & hips – that’s a significant difference for any body

Weight loss can be defined as MASS – mass can be divided up into water, fat, muscle, skin, hair, clothes, shoes, pants, so on and so on.   Losing the weight is easy if yo take off shoes, or starve yourself for a week, but losing FAT weight takes a little more effort

A 10 Day Food Challenge isn’t a cure all and the answer to all the weight problems but a way to get you focused and doing the little things that add up to real fat loss

Breakfast on the go – eating at gas stations

Every morning before 7am I get coffee and little breakfast at the gas station here by my house  on the way in to work to train clients.

I always try to get something to eat because BREAKFAST is very important to “break” the nights”fast” from sleeping 5-8hrs without food or drink.

Your body needs some sort of energy to get it going and eating something in the morning is the key to keeping your metabolism running so you don’t gain unwanted Bodyfat

My favorite choice is the “Jesus” food – sunflower seeds, cashews, almonds because they are natural, have good amount of protein, low carbs and healthy fats compared to other choices

If you have any other ideas or questions about my choices please let me know – I get these at the gas station but I know of many more out there and will always give my opinion!!

5 things you should NOT log in MyFitnessPal

Spring is almost here and some of us are serious about burning extra body fat to be ready for summer.  Here is a quick run down of things you should NOT be logging into your #myfitnesspal

If you’re looking for another BOOST to start losing fat here’s one of my tricks

  1. Soda – clean out all “regular” sodas and start drinking less “diets” (aspartame)
  2. Cut Dairy and cheese consumption – good for calcium & protein but adds extra calories
  3. Juices – good for vitamins but adds extra sugar calories to your diet
  4. Frozen Foods (tv dinners, “health choice” meals) – easy to fix but pack extra sodium and carbs
  5. Sauces/dressings – awesome assortment of flavors out there but most are loaded with sugar and sodium to add taste

If you spring clean your fridge I am most certain your body, your mind and overall well-being will follow.  When you rid yourself of all those extra carbs, starches and sugars, your body will start to take shape by utilizing its natural fat stores from the winter for energy and you will see it all come together as the Summer months approach.  You have to have a balanced approach in your nutrition and physical activity focusing on both aspects because you can’t have too much of one without the other and expect great results.
